As the year comes to a close, it seems appropriate to reflect on what it has brought us. On the professional front, I am incredibly proud of the progress achieved by the teams both at Civio –a remarkable story of continued step-by-step success– and Iris.ai –more announcements on this will follow in the new year–.
However, beyond that, 2023 has been a tough year from a personal perspective. Whilst I am very happy with the old and new routines set in motion, including the prioritisation of forging ever-more-meaningful personal relations –both with family and friends–, as well as setting aside daily time for reading, reflective learning, writing, self-editing, or the practice of sports, the health angle proved particularly tricky.
A spring pneumonia plus a multiple-infections-cum-rejection episode which started in August, with their respective relatively long hospital stays, amounted to my worst year since 2006, when I received a double lung transplant. Luckily, as my doctors highlighted when I took part in the September commemoration of Hospital Puerta de Hierro's wold-leading organ transplant-related track record, scientific progress never stops.
As a direct result, from early January I will undergo a novel treatment called photopheresis. A little cumbersome and time-consuming at first, the procedure consists of a blood-filtering treatment that works with the body's immune system to treat disease and –hopefully– avoid more rejection episodes going forward.
I cannot thank enough the myriad amazing superstars involved in providing us patients with such medical advances, enabling us to maintain an extremely high quality of life filled with opportunity!
